Run the 33rd Annual Marin Memorial Day Races!
On Monday, May 31, 2010, put your training to the test and run one of the fastest 10K courses in the Bay Area: the Marin 10K, a flat, certified loop that kicks into high gear for a dramatic finish in the College of Marin Stadium. Or challenge yourself to a walk, run, or racewalk on the new Don Ritchie 5K (replacing the old 2.5 mile course). And don't forget the very popular and fun Youth Track Races for kids 12 and under!

Beneficiaries
The Don Ritchie 5K is a new event dedicated to the memory of Don Ritchie, a long time Tamalpa Runner and Marin County educator, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2009. The walk/run event is a fund-raiser for pancreatic cancer research at the UCSF Medical Center. Other beneficiaries include the Marin County high school athletic programs: the MCAL Track and Field Championships, the MCAL Cross Country Championships, and the San Rafael Twilight Relays. Also Tamalpa's own Summer Youth Camp, a summer running program for Marin kids aged 6 to 14 (for Summer Youth Camp info, contact Jason Jacobson at (415) 246-1390 or email tamalpa3000@yahoo.com).

Exciting Championship Event Featuring Cash Prizes!
The Marin 10K is a part of the Pacific Association-USA Track & Field Road Grand Prix, guaranteeing an exciting and highly competitive field. Pacific Association athletes (with current USATF card) and club teams are eligible to win cash prizes from a $3000 prize purse.

The 10K has a long history, and the course records are fast: 28:45 (Phillemon Hanneck, 1994) and 33:26 (April Powers, 1988).  A Special Bonus Award of $1000 will be given to the overall male or female 10K winner if he or she breaks the existing course record.  Click here for a complete list of winning times over the years, plus all age group course records.

Age Group Awards
The top three male and female age group finishers in the 10K and 5K will receive engraved plaques.

Note: Only cash awards will be mailed. All age group awards MUST be picked up at the Awards Table in the race finish area. Awards not picked up on race day will be forfeited. Only the four trophies for First Overall in the two races will be presented in the Awards Ceremony.

Results
Complete 10K and 5K results will be posted here within 24 hours after the race, and the 10K individual and team results will also be posted on the PA-USATF web site. Please be aware that errors and misspellings are inevitable in the first draft of race results. Please notify us immediately of any problems and be patient; all issues will be resolved although it may take a few days before the results are final. To see current and prior years' results, click here.

Quality Tech Shirts from Adidas and Other Goodies
New this year: All 5K and 10K runners will receive an Adidas technical shirt with the official race logo. And everyone will enjoy product samples, bagels, fruit, drinks, discount coupons, and other goodies, courtesy of our sponsors.

Going Green
Tamalpa Runners is trying to minimize the environmental impact of this event by providing recycling bins at the start/finish area for cardboard, drink containers, etc.  Compostable cups will be used at the aid stations.  Bring your old running shoes for a special collection for runners in Africa.

Location and Directions
College of Marin, Kentfield, CA. From Hwy 101 in Marin, go west 2.5 miles on Sir Francis Drake Blvd. toward San Anselmo. Turn left onto College Ave. in Kentfield. Proceed one quarter mile to race venue. The two road races start on Kent Ave.

Parking
Use any College of Marin parking lot along College Ave. Parking is also available in the stadium parking lot but you will not be able to leave until 9:30 if runners are still on the course. DO NOT PARK IN THE WOODLANDS CENTER. YOU WILL BE TOWED!!!!

Headphones
For your safety and the safety of others, we request that runners not wear headphones during the Races.

Time Limitations
Because of time constraints imposed by setting the track up for the Youth Track Races, the finish line may be dismantled approximately one hour and ten minutes after the start of the 10K race. Runners finishing after that time will be hand timed and their results may not be available on race day.

Youth Track Races Youth Track Races
The Youth Track Races are held after the conclusion of the 10K and 5K. They are open to all kids age 12 or under. Distances are chosen to be appropriate for each age group, starting with a 50 yard dash for toddlers accompanied by a parent, up to a mile run for the older kids. One $5 entry fee entitles a child to as many events as he or she wishes. It's fun to be part of and fun to watch! A great photo-op, too. All kids get runner numbers, participation ribbons, and other cool souvenirs. Parents can register their kids in advance by mail or online, or right up to the last minute at a special table set up alongside the track.

Volunteers Needed!
Did you know that due to the large number of participants and the complexity of the course, the Memorial Day Races requires over 150 volunteers? If you're not planning to run, please consider volunteering a couple of hours on May 31, or on the days just before or after, to help make it happen. This year's Volunteer Coordinator is Bill Neer. If you can help on race day, e-mail him at billneer@comcast.net, or call (415) 457-6337. Please send him your name, mailing address, phone number, and your preference for what job you’d like, if any. All volunteers will receive race shirts, and will be welcomed at check-in with coffee and muffins. Teenagers are encouraged to volunteer, too, and can receive community service credit for their schools if they do.
